Has the Golden Rule Lost Its Glitter? by Tony Alessandra

Absolutely not! The Golden Rule has as much "glitter" as ever. I believe and practice it 110%, especially when it comes to values, ethics, honesty and consideration. However, when it comes to interpersonal communication, it can very well backfire. The Golden Rule states: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Basically translated, that says to treat others the way you would like to be treated, which of course isn't always the case.

An addition to the Golden Rule is The Platinum Rule: "Treat others the way they want to be treated." The focus of relationships shifts from "this is what I want, so I'll give everyone the same thing" to "let me first understand what they want and then I'll give it to them."

The goal of The Platinum Rule is personal chemistry and productive relationships. You don't have to change your personality. You simply have to understand what drives people and recognize your options for dealing with them. The Platinum Rule divides behavioral preferences into four personality styles: Director, Socializer, Relater, and Thinker. Everyone possesses the qualities of each style to various degrees and everyone has a dominant style. The key to using The Platinum Rule is understanding what a person's dominant personality style is and treating him/her appropriately.

Now to get you thinking about the concept, here is a very basic breakdown:

Directors are driven by two governing needs: to control and achieve. They are goal-oriented go-getters who are most comfortable when they are in charge of people and situations.

Socializers are friendly and enthusiastic and like to be where the action is. They thrive on admiration, acknowledgment, and compliments. They are idea-people who excel at getting others excited about their vision.

Thinkers are analytical, persistent, systematic people who enjoy problem solving. They are detail-oriented, which makes them more concerned with content than style. Thinkers are task-oriented people who enjoy perfecting processes and working toward tangible results.

Relaters are warm and nurturing individuals. They are the most people-oriented of the four styles. Relaters are excellent listeners, devoted friends, and loyal employees. They are good planners, persistent workers, and good with follow-through.

The Platinum Rule provides powerful life-skills that will serve you well in all your relationships: business, friends, family, spouse, and children.

Welcoming Problems as Gifts by Dr. John Townsend

Many times you heard the term blessing in disguise. well, EVERY problem is
actually a BIG blessing in disguise!
Everyone of us do indeed have problems in our everyday life. No matter how
small, they tend to affect us and our relationships etc... well, theres a
remedy. No, its not to stop the problems, but to turn our problem into a
gift from GOD.

Whenever you encounter a problem, look 2 ways. this is a 2step method which
may take you 1min, or maybe a few days of reflection.

Firstly, look UPWARDS.
Secondly, look INWARDS.

UPWARD
The first direction to look in order to find God's way through your problems
is upward. You must turn the eyes of your heart toward God, His Word, and
His ways. You won't need to look far, for He is waiting just beyond your own
ability to resolve your difficulty. Like a lost child crying out to a
parent, cry out to the One who knows the solution to our problem, the
lessons to be learned, and the way to get you there. Our tendency is to play
it safe. We're a little uncomfortable relying on an unpredictable God. Yet
God knows that our "safe" approach to problems dries up the soul. He invites
us to look upward to all His opportunities and resources. He is like a storm
raining down on a stagnant stream that has been clogged with debris. As the
torment floods the stream, the debris is broken up and the flow begins
again.

INWARD
The second direction to look in times of trouble is inward. Once you've
looked up to God, He will take you on a journey into yourself to teach you
valuable lessons. He will shine a lantern of truth into the recesses of your
heart, illuminating attitudes, old wounds, fresh hurts, weaknesses, and
perspectives where you need to submit to His touch.

Where Do You Go For Your Intellectual Feast? by Jim Rohn

Pity the man who has a favorite restaurant, but not a favorite author. He's picked out a favorite place to feed his body, but he doesn't have a favorite place to feed his mind!

Why would this be? Have you heard about the accelerated learning curve? >From birth, up until the time we are about eighteen, our learning curve is dramatic, and our capacity to learn during this period is just staggering. We learn a tremendous amount very fast. We learn language, culture, history, science, mathematics... everything!

For some people, the accelerated learning process will continue on. But for most, it levels off when they get their first job. If there are no more exams to take, if there's no demand to get out paper and pencil, why read any more books? Of course, you will learn some things through experience. Just getting out there – sometimes doing it wrong and sometimes doing it right - you will learn.

Can you imagine what would happen if you kept up an accelerated learning curve all the rest of your life? Can you imagine what you could learn to do, the skills you could develop, the capacities you could have? Here's what I'm asking you to do: be that unusual person who keeps up his learning curve and develops an appetite for always trying to find good ideas.

One way to feed your mind and educate your philosophy is through the writings of influential people. Maybe you can't meet the person, but you can read his or her books. Churchill is gone, but we still have his books. Aristotle is gone, but we still have his ideas. Search libraries for books and programs. Search magazines. Search documentaries. They are full of opportunities for intellectual feasting.

In addition to reading and listening, you also need a chance to do some talking and sharing. I have some people in my life who help me with important life questions, who assist me in refining my own philosophy, weighing my values and pondering questions about success and lifestyle.

We all need association with people of substance to provide influence concerning major issues such as society, money, enterprise, family, government, love, friendship, culture, taste, opportunity, and community. Philosophy is mostly influenced by ideas, ideas are mostly influenced by education, and education is mostly influenced by the people with whom we associate.

One of the great fortunes of my life was to be around Mr. Shoaff those five years. During that time he shared with me at dinner, during airline flights, at business conferences, in private conversations and in groups. He gave me many ideas that enabled me to make small daily adjustments in my philosophy and activities. Those daily changes, some very slight, but very important, soon added up to weighty sums.

A big part of the lesson was having Mr. Shoaff repeat the ideas over and over. You just can't hear the fundamentals of life philosophy too often. They are the greatest form of nutrition, the building blocks for a well-developed mind.

I'm asking that you feed your mind just as you do your body. Feed it with good ideas, wherever they can be found. Always be on the lookout for a good idea - a business idea, a product idea, a service idea, an idea for personal improvement. Every new idea will help to refine your philosophy. Your philosophy will guide your life, and your life will unfold with distinction and pleasure.

Self-Knowledge: The Key to Preparing for Competition by Denis Waitley

Self-knowledge has always been the key to preparing for competition. Knowledge of your attributes, abilities, interests, strengths, weaknesses, and traits is essential to riding the front end of the wave of change into the new century. To fully assess your own talents, realize that studies confirm that what we love and do well as children continues as our latent or manifest talent as adults.

Examination of your weekend or evening interests might reveal a gem of potential you can apply to your vocation. I strongly suggest you don’t unthinkingly relegate what you love to do for yourself solely to hobbies. You might make it, or at least integrate it into your life’s work.

The acquisition of knowledge, which is the new global power, is a life-long experience, not a collection of facts or skills. Not long ago, what you learned in school was largely all you needed to learn to secure a career. With knowledge expanding exponentially, this is no longer true. Hundreds of scientific papers are published daily.

Every thirty seconds, some new technological company produces yet another innovation. Your formal education has a very short shelf life. Life-long learning, once a luxury for the few, has become absolutely vital to continued success. Continue gaining expertise and avoid thinking like an expert.

Action Step - Increase Your Reading, Writing and Vocabulary Proficiency.
One of the most important qualities of successful leaders is an ability to express thoughts and knowledge. Research by management and human resource experts confirms that no matter what the field of employment, people with large vocabularies - those able to speak clearly and concisely, using simple as well as descriptive words - are best at accomplishing their goals. Well chosen, carefully considered words can close the sale, negotiate the raise, enhance relationships, and change destinies.

In a world of email, fax dispersal, voice mail, sound bites, concise reports, business plans, and meeting briefs, the individuals who can articulate their goals, substantiate their claims, and support their visions, will own the future. In the 21st Century, literacy will be the major difference between the haves and have-nots.

Why do fewer than 10 percent of the public buy and read nonfiction books or spend time on daily personal development? One reason is that many would rather "get home" than get ahead. They are motivated to get by and get pulled along by the company, the economy, or the government.Another reason is that many individuals believe that information found in books, computer programs, and training sessions has no value in the business world. How self-deluding!

As the new tools of productivity become the Internet, direct digital download of text, audio and video, and the combination of the interactive computer with telecommunications, the people who know how to control the new technologies will acquire power, while those who thought that education ends with the diploma are destined for low-paying, low-satisfaction jobs. In almost the blink of an eye, our society has passed from the industrial age to the knowledge era.

Increase your reading and personal development time by 100 percent. Decrease your regular television watching, and that of any children in your family by 50 percent. Surf the Internet and subscribe to personal development streaming channels and find book summaries or download free chapters from different sources. By reading book summaries, you can gain the essence of all the top business books in a very brief period of time.

Action Idea: Read at least one book each month, and listen to at least one additional audio book or education series during commute or down time.

Knowledge is the new power. And literacy is the door to knowledge.

The Power of Focus by Mark Victor Hansen

IF YOU WANT something enough, and you keep your mind focused on it, you will eventually achieve it.This was brought home to me at a relatively early age by my father. My dad came to the United States from Denmark in 1921 at the age of 17. My father was impressed by the United States as a land of opportunity. Here you could want something, work for it and get it. He worked hard and while we were never rich, we also were never poor. When I was nine years old, just old enough to ride a bike well, I gota job delivering newspapers. From my newspaper route I earned enough money to buy a bicycle magazine. My goal was to get a bicycle. I had an ideal bike in mind. I wanted this bike with my whole heart, mind, body, and spirit. I cut out a picture of the bike, and kept it next to my bed. Nightly, I went to sleep dreaming about it. I could see that bike. I could feel it. I believed it. But when I went to my father and asked for the bike, he didn't understand my desire. After some discussion, he said, "You can have it when you're 16 years old." I said, "Can I have the bike now if I earn the money myself?" I'm sure he never dreamed that a nine-year-old could earn the equivalent of $725-so he had little to lose, and he agreed. I wanted that bike so badly that in my mind I owned it already. I had engaged my mind power. Inside every mind are abilities that go beyond the normal. These abilities are tapped when we have a white-hot desire. We then figure out how to get whatever we really want to get. A Will and a Way. I saw an ad in Boy's Life magazine promoting the sale of Christmas cards. Instantly I believed that I could sell the cards. I immediately went to my mother, who was a phenomenal saleswoman. She had charisma, beauty, a radiant smile, a sincere interest in people, and she was amaster story teller. I asked her if I could sell. She said, "Not only can you sell, but I'll teach you how! It's important to have a smiling face, see a lot of people and ask everyone to buy your greeting cards. But it's most important to use the 'alternate choice' close. Ask your potential buyers, 'Would you prefer one or two boxes of Christmas cards?" So I began. I approached my neighbors in the winter of 1957 with deep snow on the ground. I went door to door every day, and when a mom answered the door, I would wipe my nose on a mitten and ask her if she'd like to buy some cards. How could she refuse a cute little kid with a runny nose? Generally she'd say, "Young man, come in here. Wecan't let you stand out in the cold." Once I got inside, I knew the sale was made. I would explain that Iwas earning money for my own bicycle. Then I'd ask, "Mrs. Shaw, would you prefer one box or two?"I was a great salesman. But I didn't want to sell 376 boxes ofChristmas cards. I had no desire to be the number-one salesman forAmerican Greeting Cards. I didn't enjoy going door to door in the cold. I was only interested in getting my bike. Focusing Produces Results. From this experience I learned the importance of working hard to get what I want. And I learned how to handle money. I learned that if I wanted something and focused my energy on it, I could tap into my mindpower. My mind power would show me the way and instruct me in what to do, so that I could have exactly what I wanted. I learned that focusing my energy works. First we visualize what we want, then we achieve it. Visualization is seeing with your mind. It is one of the most powerful principles available for creating your future.

The Miracle of Personal Development by Jim Rohn

One day Mr. Shoaff said, "Jim, if you want to be wealthy and happy, learn this lesson well: Learn to work harder on yourself than you do on your job."

Since that time I've been working on my own personal development. And I must admit that this has been the most challenging assignment of all. This business of personal development lasts a lifetime.

You see, what you become is far more important than what you get. The important question to ask on the job is not, "What am I getting?" Instead, you should ask, "What am I becoming?" Getting and becoming are like Siamese twins: What you become directly influences what you get. Think of it this way: Most of what you have today you have attracted by becoming the person you are today.

I've also found that income rarely exceeds personal development. Sometimes income takes a lucky jump, but unless you learn to handle the responsibilities that come with it, it will usually shrink back to the amount you can handle.

If someone hands you a million dollars, you'd better hurry up and become a millionaire. A very rich man once said, "If you took all the money in the world and divided it equally among everybody, it would soon be back in the same pockets it was before."

It is hard to keep that which has not been obtained through personal development.

So here's the great axiom of life:

--TO HAVE MORE THAN YOU'VE GOT, BECOME MORE THAN YOU ARE--

This is where you should focus most of your attention. Otherwise, you just might have to contend with the axiom of not changing, which is:

--UNLESS YOU CHANGE HOW YOU ARE, YOU'LL ALWAYS HAVE WHAT YOU'VE GOT--

Conceptualize my Purpose by Mark Victor Hansen

What were you put on earth to do? That's a mind-blowing question, because most people don't know the answer. Lots of folks get up, go to work, come home, eat dinner, sit in front of the television and go to sleep. That's their day. That is not anyone's purpose in life. That's not a life at all.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not throwing blame or fault. In most cases, they probably don't know any better. This was how their parents lived each day; this was how they grew up. Maybe they think this is it - this is all life has to offer.

Well, I'm here to sound the wake-up call.

There's a great scene in the movie "The Matrix" between Morpheus, a mentor, and Neo, his student. Neo has just woken up and discovered that what he thought was reality was just a world 'that had been pulled over his eyes to shield him from the truth.' Morpheus wants Neo to let go of what he used to think of as "reality," his mundane, day-to-day existence, where his true purpose was neither recognized nor realized. I want you to create a new world, a new reality, where you recognize that you have a purpose for being on this planet, and realize that your purpose is waiting for you to figure it out.

If you don't know your purpose, then your first purpose is to get a purpose.

TODAY'S LESSON:Conceptualize Your Purpose
When you look at the lives of the most successful people who ever lived, you can see that they had a definite purpose and they knew it. Some examples are: Christ - His purpose was spiritual, and stated in John 10:10, which reads: "I am come that you might have life, and that you might have it more abundantly."

Walt Disney's purpose: "To make people happy."

Dr. R. Buckminster Fuller's purpose: "Humanity's comprehensive welfare on spaceship earth."

Henry Ford's purpose: "To mass produce, mass distribute and have cars mass consumed."

Andrew Carnegie's purpose: "To manufacture and market steel."

Mother Teresa's purpose: "To care for and comfort the poor, sick and needy all over the world."

I don't want you to confuse a purpose with a goal. Goals are great! I teach goal setting, and believe it is crucial to achieving any kind of success. But goals alone, left by themselves, can be indiscriminate and undirected. We can have hundreds of goals (and I hope you do), but we may only have one purpose that we work for our entire life. That purpose should be the underlying core that gives our goals direction andmeaning.

Discovering your purpose will put your life into crystal-clear perspective. You won't see the world you once knew. You will see another world, one in which you are a necessary and intricate spoke in the wheel. The saddest places on earth are graveyards. Not because people are buried there, but because dreams, talents and purposes that never came to fruition are buried there. Graveyards are filled with books that were never written, songs that were never sung, words that were never spoken, things that were never done. You have talents and gifts that no one else can offer. There are things you can do that no one else is capable of doing quite the way YOU can do them. Don't rob this earth of your purpose by taking it to the grave with you. You see, we all have a purpose, a reason for living, breathing and existing. We all have unique talents and gifts that were created and given to us to be shared. Our task is to understand this and figure out what our purpose is. We owe it to the Universe AND to ourselves!

"You will become as small as your controlling desire, or as great as your dominant aspiration."

YOUR ACTION STEP
In closing, I'd like to offer an exercise to complete in the week ahead:

WHAT IS MY PURPOSE? You cannot find this answer in a book or a class. (Wouldn't it be fantastic if you could?) The answer can only be found deep inside of you. How do you find your purpose? My suggestion is meditation, or deep, controlled, concentrated thought. I want you to find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed. Relax and tap into your mind, way back there in the deepest, secret compartment of your mind, by asking ourself this question: "If I knew my life purpose, what would it be?" Don't just ask it once. Keep asking this question until you get the answer. It may not come the first day, or even the first week. But it's there, and it will show its face if you earnestly ask. This is like a beacon that will attract your purpose that has been waiting for you to ask the question. Do this every morning and every night for 15 minutes until the answer comes to you, and then write it down. And don't be surprised if it comes to you during the day, while you're at the grocery store, or taking the dog for a walk. Be open to the answer, no matter when it comes to you.

Remember, it wants you just as much as you want it.

What to do when you don't know what to do

This is an audio sermon by Pastor Kong Hee. Interesting title.

1. Set my heart to seek the Lord.
2. Stand before God.
3. Wait on the Lord.
4. Praise Him way before anything happens.

Amen!
